no sushi?!

Seems like there's no end to what you can't do when you're pregnant.

Seventeen years ago in Italy, they just told me "try not to drink and smoke too much."

This time it's no drinking, no smoking, no sushi, no soft cheese, no green tea, no black tea, (but Good Morning America says I can drink coffee!), no getting a tattoo, no dying my hair, no bleaching it, no sauna, no hot tub, no worrying... I'm sure I've forgotten the most of it.

(12 weeks... and getting rounder by the day)

I'm totally thrilled for you! After all these years, another baby, must seem surreal!

Anyway I have to ask a question, and I'm sorry for being nosy bit it's my nature (and you can just ignore me or tell me to shut up) but is there a Mister Gore in the picture? I don't recall ever ready about a mister. Or a mrs. I'm just hoping you're not too alone with you're daughter leaving for school soon and all! Lots for a momma to handle!

Take care! Love your posts and the pics!

Beautiful! I think as long as you are getting your sushi from a reputably sushi chef it's fine. Japanese ladies do it, don't they? And I drank Yerba Mate when I was pregnant...I never read anything about that being bad (though it's probably because the pregnancy police just haven't caught up with it).

I ate sushi all through my last three pregnancies, it's one of the things that always tasted good to me. My husband said the same thing, "Japanese women eat it all the time!" You look great. I can't wait for the book to be written after this baby is born.

Do you know that Moonies control the sushi industry? The fish part, that is...http://snipurl.com/rckj

The thing with sushi and raw cheese etc. is to avoid getting a food borne illness as pretty much all food borne illnesses are unhealthy for pregnancy. Someone decided that sushi increases your chances of getting sick. While pregnant avoided sushi but forgot and had two huge orders of multiple raw oysters which is probably way more risky. Also mercury and all but sushi fish amounts are pretty small if you get like an a la carte melange of different fishes. Anyway- blah blah blah. The italians of 17 years ago pretty much have it right on- "try not to smoke too much" and the rest is icing. I do think avoiding raw milk is a good idea.

Anyway- you look gorgeous. I'm super inspired. I'm not really into having another kid right now but I'm excited about keeping an open mind and seeing what happens.

I as driving to work this morning and baby names started popping into my head... I haven't visited your site in quite a while and as a fan and a woman I'm happy for you and your new babe in the womb! So here are the names that I'm sure I was emant to pass along...

Grace
Alex
Olivia
Genevieve (Only sounds good if you say like the french - 'zgen-vieve')

Some of the older granny names are sounding new again... no examples to share right now. 'Tabitha' is just not sitting right with me.

Take Care!

don't women in japan eat sushi while pregnant? my girlfriend is pregnant and i think avoiding leftover sushi the next day is a good compromise.
for a boy, noah
for a girl, lea or leah
and what made you to decide to do it again after 17 years?

I ran into a girl at a party who told me you were pregnant, and when I opened your blog, your belly was at the top of the page. Hallulujah. You're going to be a hip mama for life!

Hell, seventeen years from now, you could have another! Babies in succession.

Congratulations.

Holy Shit! I was just thinking yesterday that I owe Maria a call (um, since Thanksgiving), that's how busy/exhausted I've been...but your busy is much more exciting! Congratulations!!!

As far as names go, I have to second some of the other suggestions: I like Luna, Xochi, Rosa, and Ruby; for boys I really like Moses lately (maybe it's my latent crush on Mos Def). Also Ezra, and Archer (could also be for a girl). I know about 2,000 Jonahs, so you might want to avoid that one.

Cute belly! Hope the barfs are getting better. Mega protein is supposed to be good for nausea (something about L-glutamine?), but I don't know about vomiting without nausea.

Also, come read in Santa Cruz again! We'll put you up, and won't make you smoke ciggies and eat goat cheese.

if you really want good advice on pregnancy, go back to your book, "hip mama's guide to pregnancy... " or, the short version was: avoid street drugs, and take all other things in moderation. although the sauna/hot tub thing might be different (generally having your core body temperature go up too much isn't healthy for the baby.) but sushi, tea, alcohol... all the rest is only problematic when you go too far.

enjoy. warm fuzzies from a groupie that met you in cambridge when you read here last...

Hey lady, your belly looks fab.
Listen, eat whatever the hell you want. I had to have sushi, so I had sushi. The important thing is that MAMA is HAPPY.

Just, you know, don't drink a fifth a day or something, cut back on heroin and crack, you know, the big stuff.

And wow, you have formula already, that's just ducky. *eye roll*
Hope you found a care provider you like, dear! And thanks for posting the pic!

Hooray for you, your family and your wee fetus, I'm always happy to hear about a fantastic intelligent mother having another baby...

(Now then onto my totally unrelated comment to the congratulations, but for the "everything in moderation folks": Um... Yeah, maybe this is just the lifetime of being Straight Edge talking but I always feel compelled to smack pregnant women who have the audacity to drink while pregnant. If you can't resist imbibing for nine months, maybe you have an issue to tackle beside the "pregnancy police"... alcoholism.)
